Have you ever felt like you’re working and working and working and yet, making little headway? More than that, do you ever had trouble connecting “purpose” and “meaning” to all the demands and challenges you encounter in your job? According to recent job satisfaction statistics you’re not alone. Nearly 1 in 2 American workers report some major dissatisfaction in their jobs!

This weekend we’re going to look at a story of a boatload of discouraged fishermen who had fished and fished all night long and caught nothing. That’s right: not one single fish.

What makes their failure all the more apparent is that advice of “novice fisherman” Jesus who tells these weary men to let down their nets and try again. Not willing to disappoint him, they reluctantly followed his advice to find their nets so full of fish they struggled to get the catch into their boats. Overwhelmed by this miracle-worker rabbi abilities and his sense of failure, Peter falls at Jesus’ feet. And it is at that moment of openness and vulnerability – for Peter had to first let down his net – that Jesus calls this man to a new way of living and letting God fish through him for people! The offer was too good to be true. When the fishermen got to shore, they left everything to follow Jesus.

What about us? What would be our “net” that we need to lower in order to finding a new way of living into God’s kingdom? Come this weekend and find out. And yes…don’t forget to bring your net!

As you prepare for worship, please read and meditate upon: Luke 5:1-11 – Jesus challenges some ordinary fishermen to “drop their nets” in order to make a new type of “catch.” Psalm 90:14-17 – The Psalmist prays for God to bless the work of his servants.
