Monday, February 2, 2015. Psalm 20:7.

Happy Groundhog Day. The old legend says that if Punxsutawney Phil, the groundhog, comes out of his home and sees his shadow, then there will be six more weeks of winter. Do you trust that?

What do you trust? The Psalm today contrasts people who trust in chariots against those who trust in the name of the Lord. A chariot, back in those days, was a military fighting machine. So, if we were to update the Psalm to our culture, it might read like this: Some trust in tanks, fighter jets, and a huge nuclear arsenal, but we trust in the name of the Lord.

Maybe another version might hit closer to home. “Some trust in having a good job, being popular, getting good grades, getting a scholarship, living in the right neighborhood, knowing the right people, but we trust in the name of the Lord.”

The passage for the week is Matthew 6-7. Jesus basically tells us to not worry about anything, but trust that God is our loving parent who has our best interest in mind. It is true that we might never be rich, famous, or powerful, according to the world’s standards, but the love of God is deeper and more real than any of those things.

Whether Phil sees his shadow, or whether you have nice things, it doesn’t matter. You have the love of God. You can trust that today. Share it with others.
